About the Author

Binay Kanti Dutta is a former chairman of the West Bengal Pollution Control Board, Kolkata, India. He has been involved in research and teaching in chemical engineering since 1970. He has taught at the Regional Engineering College (now the National Institute of Technology), Durgapur, India; the University of Calcutta, Kolkata, India; the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada; the Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Perak, Malaysia; and the Petroleum Institute, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. He has also worked as a visiting scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Boulder, Colorado, USA; the Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, New Jersey, USA; and the Environmental Protection Agency, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. He is a former head of the Chemical Engineering Department and a former director of the Academic Staff College at the University of Calcutta. Professor Dutta has published extensively on transport processes, mathematical modeling, membranes separation, reaction engineering, and environmental engineering, and holds a number of US, European, and Malaysian patents. He is the author of Heat Transfer―Principles and Applications and Principles of Mass Transfer and Separation Processes. He also served as the 2005 president of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers.

As a result, some soldiers adapted the rhetoric of Manifest Destiny to their own purposes, taking for themselves what had been promised, often by looting the Mexican countryside or committing racial and sexual atrocities. Others deserted the army to fight for the enemy or seek employment in the West. These acts, Foos argues, along with the government's tacit acceptance of them, translated into a more violent, damaging variety of Manifest Destiny.

About the Author

Elizabeth C. Mansfield  is Vice President for Scholarly Programs at the National Humanities Center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.  She  has taught art history at New York University and the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee . A scholar of modern European art and art historiography, her publications include books and articles on topics ranging from the origins of modernism to Picasso’s Demoiselles d’Avignon to the contemporary performance and body art of Orlan. Her 2007 book Too Beautiful to Picture : Zeus, Myth, and Mimesis was awarded the College Art Association’s Charles Rufus Morey book prize.     The late H.H. Arnason was a distinguished art historian, educator, and museum administrator who for many years was Vice President for Art Administration of the Solomon Guggenheim Museum in New York. He began his professional life in academia, teaching at Northwestern University, University of Chicago, and the University of Hawaii. From 1947 to 1961, Arnason was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Art at the University of Minnesota.

I saw this book in a museum (the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA) and had the chance to peruse the museum's copy (which was of the previous edition) before buying it. After just spending 15-20 minutes with it in the museum, I became convinced that it was worth the hefty price. Now, having purchased the most recent edition, I am glad I did. It is an expensive book, but worth the price, in my opinion, as it contains a wealth of information and a wealth of art.The book was originally written by H.H. Arnason, who, as the book's Preface explains, was Professor and Chairman of the University of Minnesota's Art Department from 1947 to 1961. He also held other posts and was affiliated with the Guggenheim Museum. Since Arnason passed away some time ago, recent editions of the book have been updated by Elizabeth C. Mansfield (Associate Professor of Art at NYU), who has brought the book up to the present (as recent as 2006) with sections on globalization and postcolonial theory.Both Arnason and Mansfield are clearly intelligent scholars who place the art within its historical context to help us to see what it did, where the innovations were, and what conflicts and issues were live at that time. For example, the opening chapter deals with the legal case between Ruskin and Whistler, in which Whistler sued Ruskin for libel when Ruskin defamed Whistler's painting "Nocturne in Black and Gold." The battle was over whether Whistler could charge such a large amount of money for something that, in Ruskin's eyes, was not art. The (his)story is told in a very readable way, with the painting shown, and it is a perfect and intelligent way to open the book, since a crucial issue involved in modern art is, what makes it art and who decides?I have not had time to work my way through the whole book (it is 830 pages), but I have liked very much what I have read so far. The index is handy for finding the artists one is interested in, if you don't want to wade through the book, since the chapters are organized thematically. The book may be intended for College textbook use, but I think it is definitely interesting enough to be read by anyone interested in art and painting. It's probably a bit too large and intimidating to work well as a real "introductory" book for someone who knows nothing about art or modern art (unless you have a seriously scholarly mind), but otherwise, I think it is as accessible as it can be given its size and scope, it makes for some great reading and it also passes as a good reference work. I recommend it.

Arnason goes into great detail for each art genre that existed during the 20th (and now 21st) century. It is a more engaging and explanative art history book than many others I have encountered. She writes in a fashion that is completely understandable yet very intelligent, rather than the strictly scholarly speak I have found in other volumes.

Nice overview of modern art. It's what I wanted. The particular copy I got was in good condition for an excellent price.

This is a pretty amazing treatment of the arts including photography and architecture from the late 19th century though the 20th to the early years of this century. It's not an easy read although well worth it. In addition to treatments of various works of art and artists the authors discuss their role inn the society of the time and in the larger scope of art.Janet Condino

About the Author After serving in the pastorate for seventeen years, Duane and Mary Laflin entered a full time traveling ministry that has taken them to nearly every state in the USA and to a number of foreign countries. They use gospel magic tricks to attract audiences and illustrate spirutual truth.

Their ministry has been a featured subject on the national radio program, The Osgood Files. Duane has also been seen performing tricks for television specials on The Discovery Channel and The Learning Channel.

Duane was the international president of the Fellowship of Christian Magicians for four years. He has written numerous pamphlets featuring gospel magic routines, published a magazine featuring gospel magic, produced five videos explaining gospel magic lessons and techniques, lectured and performed at every major convention of gospel magicians in the world, lectured and performed for nearly every major convention of secular magicians in America, and been a special guest performer and lecturer at the British Ring convention, which is one of the largest gatherings of magicians in Europe.

He also has been a guest lecturer at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, California.
